Derren Brown – Predict Lotto Results?
Greetings to all of our followers, in today’s blog we will be taking a slightly new approach to enable us to discuss a very hot topic at the moment that’s been circulating in our offices here at Eflex Computers
For those of you that didn’t watch the TV programme on Wednesday night Derren Brown correctly ‘predicted’ the national lottery results live on channel 4, whilst the lottery draw was taking place over on BBC1. The debates that ensued in our offices over the next few days raised some very interested theories (and also meant we didn’t manage to get a lot of work done). Our computer programmers were bombarded by requests from other members of staff asking them to create a ‘lottery predictor’ program that we could all use to get rich quick! If Derren Brown can do it then so can a computer right? Wrong!
The lottery is monitored to ensure it is entirely random, that means that every week the chances of any 6 numbers coming out are exactly the same as the week before. No patterns, frequent numbers etc have any bearing on the next week’s results and so to create a program that looks for these patterns would be a complete waste of time.
Our computer programmers did have an interesting theory however on how Derren Brown actually managed to make it look like he had predicted the results. As Derren was in an empty studio with no audience they suggest that the actual image we saw on the left hand side showing the lottery balls was in fact a pre recorded ‘feed’ overlaid onto the main picture of Derren and the TV screen showing the results coming in. Then when Derren had all the results someone simply placed the correct numbered balls onto the rack and the overlay was removed. Our programmers assure us that this could be done fairly easily and give a seamless transition so little or no viewers could even notice it had happened.
Tonight on channel 4 Derren will be revealing how he managed to perform this trick and we at Eflex Computers really do hope it was done in an exciting and unique way that we didn’t manage to think of! Mainly so we can spend Monday morning discussing it and also prove our computer programmers wrong (they are so rarely wrong we have to seize our opportunities!)
